Make IKEA Amazing: IKEA Hack Tips from an Experienced Hack-er

Up next in our IKEA to the Max series of tips and tutorials: Madeline from The Life We Dream is an experienced hack-er and she’s got some great ideas and tips for everyone who wants to make IKEA look amazing! See all the IKEA to the Max posts here (and all our previous IKEA posts here), and be sure to subscribe by RSS or email to get updates for every post.
IKEA Hack Tips from someone who has hacked a lot of IKEA! @Remodelaholic

Q&A: IKEA Hack Tips from Madeline of The Life We Dream

Why (or when) do you choose to hack IKEA, vs. building from scratch, shopping a thrift store, buying new elsewhere, etc?
I choose IKEA for a few reasons- they have pieces with lines that I love that I can easily make my own. Then, of course, there is price. I can justify putting a little bit more into the piece to make sure I love it when its original price is lower! I also think if you put the pieces together well (make sure to tighten everything! And then go back and tighten again in about a week!), they hold up very well. And of course if I fail… there isn’t too much money in it! I don’t have the skills to build from scratch or the patience to shop at thrift stores!
What do you look for in a piece you’re hacking?
When looking at pieces to hack, I always look at the original lines. If I don’t like how it looks, painting it or adding things to it might not help! I also like to look at the directions for assembly before buying the piece- then you know for sure how it goes together and what would be easy to change, switch, or paint.

Easiest IKEA hack: Sometimes it isn’t about how much you change the IKEA pieces, but how you use them. By using a few different floating shelves and tv cabinets, I was able to create a fun and functional focal wall in our living room. I never tired of looking at it, thats for sure! (In this picture there are 6 big IKEA pieces and countless IKEA accessories!

If you could only have 3 things in your IKEA hack tool arsenal, what would it be? (i.e. what are your top 3 must-haves for making IKEA custom)
Paint definitely! And new hardware.
What do you love from IKEA, that doesn’t even NEED hacking? Or do you hack it all? :)
IKEA is getting better and better! I love their shoe cabinets (although I would add new hardware…) their cabinets for making built ins, & their accessories can’t be beat!

Most Used IKEA Hack

nordli-hack

Most used IKEA hack: Our bedroom was pretty narrow in our last house so we needed really skinny bedside tables. These Nordli nightstands were perfect- and with just a little work look so cute!

What piece is next on your hack list?
We just moved into a new house, so I am currently trying to figure out what exactly I need. I am loving this bench for an entry way (http://ift.tt/1RNwUj1) & I am thinking of turning this box into a planter (http://ift.tt/1SpDrgi). Not all hacks must be big!
What’s your number one IKEA shopping tip?
Know what you want before you go- and check if it is in stock! You can check all IKEA stores online. There is nothing worse than being excited about a project and finding out what you want isn’t there! And unless you are planning on spending all day there, don’t even go upstairs!

Biggest IKEA Hack

Ikea-Kallax-Hack-e1431648498306

This Kallax Hack is probably the biggest hack we have done! We had to do some trouble shooting along the way, but I love love love the little feet and the wood tones on this piece! Plus, I love that it is a Kallax but you can’t even tell- no little square boxes!

This one could be interesting… What’s your worst *failed* IKEA hack? And could you save it to make it a win?
Usually I can turn my failures into wins! While trying to make this media console we failed a few times. The unit is really long and needed extra support- but it is hard when you are working with hollow materials! Eventually we got it back together- and it was perfect! When we sold the house, the new owners bought it!
I also tried to use glue on IKEA Lack tables and that was pretty much a fail. I don’t know if I used the wrong glue… or it was just not meant to be!
Any other tips/encouragement for fellow hackers?
Google is your friend! There are awesome tutorials on painting IKEA laminate & how to finish IKEA butcher block. Be creative! Have fun! Know that if plan A doesn’t work, there are 25 more letters! Once you are finished, you will be so happy to have a custom piece!

Double IKEA Rast chest hack to make a long dresser with storage cubbies, Oh Everything Handmade on @Remodelaholic

Hi, there glad to be back with a fun IKEA Rast Hack 101 tutorial overview. I finished this piece a few years ago for my son’s room. After months of trying to find a dresser that was fitting our needs, I decided to build it myself. We wondered through the IKEA isles when the idea came to me that I could attach two IKEA RAST dresser to achieve more storage space, and stay within a low budget.

I envisioned a dresser with some storage options for books and toys. Something he could grow into and use for a few years.

IKEA RAST Hack 101- Paining the dresser

Step by step overview

  • use two 1′ x 6’ft boards and cut them to the length needed.
  • glue and screw the bottom board to the bottom of the two dressers.
  • flip it over and attach the top the same way as the bottom
  • fill in the front of the dressers with 2″ boards
  • measure the height, then glue and screw on the sideboard
  • attach a shelf with glue and screws

IKEA RAST Hack 101- attaching border and shelving

  • apply a border for a nicer finish
  • fill any gaps or imperfections with wood filler (let dry)
  • sand the entire piece with 180 – 200 grit sandpaper
  • paint or stain

IKEA RAST Hack 101- filling empty spaces

To make the entire dresser appear taller, I use 1 package of the CAPITA legs from Ikea. And painted the drawer knobs.

  • Acrylic paint and small brush for the knobs (your desired color, I used turquoise paint from hobby lobby)

That’s it you guys!

Hope you enjoyed my overview for the Ikea RAST Hack.

How to turn IKEA industrial -- from a cheap shelf to a beautiful wood and metal industrial style shelf Real Happy Space on @Remodelaholic

How to: IKEA Hack Industrial Shelf
by Suzy of Real Happy Space

Tell us about you and your site. What’s your favorite part of DIYing, and what are some of your favorite projects?

Hey fellow Remodelaholic readers! I’m very excited to be here sharing my Ikea hack with you guys today.

I started my blog, Real Happy Space, to share my diy home and decor projects (and spare my husband from listening to me yammer on about my latest idea). I love upcycling items, recycling scraps and tweaking something store-bought to make it uniquely perfect for our home. Two of my favorite projects so far are this penny starburst mirror and this wooden bench I pulled off the curb and transformed.

Which IKEA piece(s) did you hack? and why did you choose that (over another product, or building from scratch, etc)?

We have a small corner in our dining room that needed a furniture piece to provide some nice storage and display, but we also wanted to keep a few items out of reach from our mischievous toddler. The room already had a wood dining table and wood dresser, so I wanted a touch of metal to contrast those heavy wood pieces. In a nutshell, we were in need of a budget-friendly storage solution for a small space, so Ikea was a natural choice.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I always look at the least expensive options first and then work my way up. When I came across the Hyllis shelving unit I knew I had found “the one.” It was the perfect size for my space and you can’t beat that $15 price tag. Yes, at first glance it didn’t look like something I wanted in my dining room, but that’s where the hacking part comes in.

What did you do?

To dress up this basic shelving unit for my dining room, I first gave it a couple coats of matte black spray paint. It took two cans to cover the whole thing.

I wanted to make the shelves look a little more substantial, so I added wood planks to the shelves. I first cut 1” x 12” boards to the correct length (23 9/16″ for the bottom three shelves and 23 10/16″ for the top shelf). Next I ripped the boards to the correct depth (10 5/8″ for the bottom three and 10 13/16″ for the top shelf). After the stain and poly was dry it was time to add them to the shelving unit.

With the metal shelves completely assembled, I loosened the screws slightly for the bottom three shelves, then simply set the shelves in place and tighten the screws back up. This kept the wood snug in place.

How to add wood to a metal ikea shelf, ikea hack, by Real Happy Space featured on @Remodelaholic

To attach the top shelf, I aligned the wood on top of the metal shelf and used clamps to secure it, I then unscrewed the metal shelf, flipped it upside down and placed it on my work surface. I used a drill to make four holes in the metal and wood, I then used screws to secure the wood to the metal. Lastly, I camouflaged the screws with a touch of spray paint.

Would you do it again? Why or why not? and if yes, what would you do differently next time?

Functional decor on a budget, ikea hack, by Real Happy Space featured on @Remodelaholic
I would absolutely do this hack again. I actually just bought another Hyllis and have plans to “hack” that one too! The only thing I would do differently would be to spray paint the shelving unit in pieces, rather than painting it after assembling it. I think that would probably be a more efficient way to paint it.
How much time did the project take?
The total assembly time was probably only a couple hours, but there was a lot of time spent waiting for paint and stain to dry.
What was the total final cost?
Wood and metal bookshelf, ikea hack, by Real Happy Space featured on @Remodelaholic
All in, about $50. The shelving unit was $15, I spent about $10 on spray paint and roughly $25 on wood. I used Aspen, but I probably could have saved more money by using pine. I already had stain and poly on hand.
Any tips for other DIYers or IKEA hackers?

There are so many ways you could customize this piece by using different paint or stain colors. I love that it’s so inexpensive, so you’re not risking much. Why not go out on a limb and try something totally different?
