Hi, it’s Amy from Hertoolbelt back with another build plan: a double X console table.
I changed a few things up from the original inspiration, the length, depth and I wanted the X legs a little more chunky.

One of the best features of this table is the versatility of the table length. I decided to build mine 5 1/2 feet long (66″). Cut the Top and Shelves according to your desired length.

- 2 – 1″ x 12″ x 6′ board (actual dimensions 3/4″ x 11 1/4″)
- 4 – 1″ x 3″ x 8′ board (actual dimensions 3/4″ x 2 1/2″)
- 2 – 1″ x 2″ x 8′ board (actual dimensions 3/4″ x 1 1/2″)
- 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws
- wood glue
- sandpaper
- wood filler
- paint/primer/stain/top coat
- Approximate lumber cost: $47
Cut List
- 1 – 1 1/2″ x 11 1/4″ x 66″
- 2 – 3/4″ x 11 1/4″ x 66″
- 4 – 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ x 34 5/8″ with 30 deg miter on both ends
- 8 – 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ x 17 3/8″ with 30 deg miter on both ends, see diagram
- 10 – 3/4″ x 1 1/2″ x 11 3/8″
Step 1
Cut the 4 base long legs from 1×3 boards, 34 5/8″ long with 30 deg miter cuts on both ends (in the same direction).
Cut 8 base short legs from 1×3 boards. Cut the pieces 17 3/8″ long with 30 deg miter cuts on both ends, in opposite directions.
Step 2
Drill pocket hole in one end of each of the base short leg pieces. Mark 17 3/8″ up on each side of the long base leg, see diagram. Use wood glue and 1 1/4″ screws to secure 2 short base legs to a long base leg. Repeat for 4 X’s.
Step 3
Cut the 10 – 3/4″ x 11 3/8″ shelf support pieces. Drill pocket holes in each end of the shelf support pieces. Attach the shelf support pieces to a X with wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. See diagram for dimensions. Repeat for other X base.
Attach another X to the other side of the shelf support pieces. Use wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws to secure the shelf support pieces to the X. (You may need the short pocket hole bit to install the screws.)
Step 4
Cut the tops and the shelves to length. Place the top pieces on top of the X’s. Slide the middle and bottom shelf into place.
Step 5
Fill the pocket holes with filler and allow to dry. Sand the console table until it is smooth, finishing with 120-150 grit sandpaper. I first primed the X legs, then painted them white. I applied pre-stain conditioner to the top and shelves, then stained them with Rustoleum Carrington. You’ll want to protect the stained wood with a top coat, like polyurethane.
Once all of the finish dried, I slid the top and shelves into place and that’s it! Done!
