Aside from the kitchen reveal, seeing the Fixer Upper living room transformation is my favorite part of HGTV’s hit show. Chip and Joanna Gaines renovated “The Chicken House” for the Messerall family in Season 3, Episode 16. This Fixer Upper living room is a perfect example of the contemporary farmhouse style Joanna has become famous for.
Want to achieve this same look in your own home? Here I’ve broken down the elements of the Chicken House Fixer Upper living room for you. Plus, you’ll find links to similar furniture, textiles, decor, and more.

1. Black & White Statement Wallpaper
Wallpaper is a fresh way to create instant interest in a room. The Ladwig Scandinavian Block Tulip Wallpaper from Wayfair is almost identical to the pattern Joanna used in the Messerall family’s farmhouse living room. Some other nice black and white wallpaper patterns from Wayfair are the Westhope Indiana Damask and Linda Circuit Modern Ironwork Geometric.
2. Soft Textiles in White & Yellow
Joanna keeps the textiles in this room soft by choosing curtains, blankets, and pillows in shades of white and yellow. Etsy is one of my favorite places to find pillow covers. I found a Scribble Corn Yellow Pillow and White Pillow with Buttons that mirror the pillows used in this Fixer Upper living room.
3. Contemporary Grey Furniture
This living room’s contemporary grey furniture speaks to my style sensibilities. I love how the clean lines and tufted accents throw a hint of mid-century modern into the mix. The Bencoma sofa, chair, and ottoman available from Wayfair will help you achieve this look in your own living room. The Felton sofa, chair, and ottoman from Target are other, even more affordable, options.
4. Rustic Chic Coffee Table
The white round coffee table lends a rustic chic vibe to the living room that helps balance out the more contemporary sofa and armchairs. And no Fixer Upper room is complete without strategically placed greenery in oversized vases. You can snag a similar oversized wine bottle from Pottery Barn. TJ Maxx and Marshall’s are other good stores where you can find less expensive oversized vases.
5. Simply Styled Mantel
With statement wallpaper as a backdrop, you want to keep your mantel styling simple. Here Joanna anchored the mantel with a single framed mirror and open back frame. A few black candlesticks, a ceramic vase, and vintage books complete the look.
What’s your favorite feature of this contemporary farmhouse living room?
