Budget Friendly Modern Farmhouse Family Room Makeover

Hi Guys! This is Kristin from Postbox Designs E-Design and I am thrilled to be back for another month with an exclusive Mood Board just for you guys! For my design clients the #1 request I get by far is some version of a “Farmhouse” or “Fixer Upper” style room. So if you are loving this look too, read on for a farmhouse family room…

We used to associate “Farmhouse” with good ole memories at the farm visiting Grandma and Grandpa. Visions of a beat-up wood table and out-of-date wallpaper might fill your mind. But today “Modern Farmhouse” has swept our Family Rooms and we have fallen in love with all things rustic, homey, and neutral. So today is all about adding some Farmhouse Charm to your Family Room. Best part is…everything on the Mood Board I created (as an exclusive just for you guys BTW) is affordable and live-able. In fact, the beauty of the Farmhouse Style…a few nicks and dings just add to the charm!

So if you love the Farmhouse Decor Style…where do you start? I'm so glad you asked!

8 Steps to Adding Farmhouse Charm to Your Family Room (Without Going Overboard)

1. Distressed Woods

As a mom of three kids I am LOVING that the more beat-up my furniture, the better! Add pieces with some distressing or weathering-just as a caution, I try not to mix more than three main wood pieces. If you get too many wood tones, it can look a bit messy. Add in some black iron pieces or even some nickel or gold accents in furniture pieces to mix it up. Painted, chippy white surfaces ALWAYS work in the Farmhouse style too.

2. Sisal

No matter your style, a sisal rug can work in your home. For the Farmhouse look it has the natural element as well as being super neutral. Best yet, sisal is super affordable: the rug I found for my Mood Board was just $89 (for a 5×8). You can also try jute or striped rug for a Fixer Upper look.

3. Neutral, Neutral, Neutral

One of the keys of the Modern Farmhouse is layers of beiges, grays, whites, and creams. When done right it gives a calm, peaceful feel…plus you can add in some pops of colors to give it some interest. But how do you keep it from getting boring? The key is layering lots of different materials and textures (check out the Mood Board). Plus, I think pillows are a great way to add some pattern. If you are still feeling overwhelmed, try sticking to a three color palette. In the Mood Board I created, I stuck to blues, browns, and creams.

4. Add some Farmstyle Art

If you want your room to scream Farmhouse, you can never go wrong with a cow photograph! The photo I chose for my Mood Board has some whimsy to it without being cheesy (plus it starts at under $6!) Try a photo of a barn or a weathered element. I love doing something in black and white photography.

5. Baskets

You can (almost) never have too many baskets. Woven baskets add warmth and are super practical. Choose an oversized one for extra throws or kid toys. Smaller ones can corral items, or you can even pop a plant into it (I know you all are loving those fiddle fig trees!). You can also try some galvanized or wire bins for an industrial edge.

6. Add some greenery

Whether real or fake (I prefer the term “faux” to take the guilt from my brown thumb), not only does it add a pop of color and interest, but it reminds us of where this whole Farmhouse style movement starting-farming, i.e. growing beautiful plants.

7. A White Sofa

A white sofa is a staple of the farmhouse look (but you can swap in light tan or light gray if white seems a bit too scary!). In my opinion the best way to go white is with a slipcover. I own two slipcovered white sofas…I just replaced my slipcover after ten years (this is with 3 kids AND 3 dogs!). The sofa from my Mood Board clocks in at just $700, but also try Ikea and Pottery Barn for their farmhouse sofas.

8. Farmhouse Wall Treatments

You know there is NO way to make a list without including the Farmhouse staple: shiplap. I suggest just choosing one wall or focal point to add shiplap to-it creates a statement without going overboard. I included a link to a tutorial as part of the Mood Board, or just find it HERE! However, just to mix it up….I’m going to call it now. I think the shiplap craze is going to be replaced by my personal fav: board and batten. I just added it to my own Family Room and I love the cottage feel it brings (for under $100 in materials).
