Bridgette was looking for some advice for finishing touches on her kitchen remodel — doesn’t it look great! (See more of her kitchen question and our readers’ suggestions here.)
From Bridgette: “We are almost done remodeling our kitchen. We recently had two walls professionally removed to open the kitchen up to the living and dining rooms, and then we removed most of the upper cabinets, painted the rest of the cabinets white, made the rustic open shelves, built a pantry, and made the built in around the fridge ourselves. (We finished the built in and pantry today, so I still have to decorate those shelves!) We plan to do a white Moroccan tile backsplash from the counter to the window and install crown molding to the ceiling soon. We will also add a trim detail to the side of the built in to match the rest of the cabinet sides in the kitchen. I would like to add some kind of hanging lights over the sink.”

Faux Reclaimed Wood V-Groove Paneling Ceiling by Michelle
Items Required:
EverTrue 3.56in x 8ft V-Groove Gold Pine Wood Wall Paneling (from Lowe’s)
Various Stain Colors and Paint Brushes
Table Saw
Liquid Nail
Staple/Nail Gun
1 ½ Staples
When we purchased this Condo, we decided that we wanted to do something with the expansive white ceiling. We discovered this product at Lowes called EverTrue V-Groove Gold Pine Wood Wall Panel. The benefit to using this V-Groove product is the ease of staining, as well the fact that it accepts the stain so well. And, as an added bonus, it’s easy to install and extremely light. And even though this product was made for wall paneling – you wouldn’t believe how well it does when installed on a ceiling!
The Pine Wood Panels come in packs of six and are 8ft long and approximately 3.5 inches wide. The first step to completing this product is choosing the stains. We found that any type of stain will work and it doesn’t have to be applied perfectly, as the rustic, almost “messy” look was in fact what we were going for. Have fun with it! We mixed stain colors and applied different colors to each ends of the boards, creating a more “reclaimed” wood feel. The stain dries quickly and can be installed within a day of staining being completed.
We started with a clean ceiling, free of debris. Forgive the pictures, all we had access to was a cell phone.
As far as choosing which panels to install and where, we decided that we would match up similar colors in sections, mixing the light and dark colors, while attempting to create some sort of pattern, along the way, as you can see from the pictures below.
We decided to start from one end of the room and not worry too much about the possibility of “slivers” at the other end and cut each board, as needed, when needed. Which, by the way, are barely noticeable. We used various sizes from whole panels to 12in, using a table saw to make the cuts. However, the panels could be cut with a hand saw, if a table saw isn’t available. Before installing each piece, we put some liquid nail on the back of each one and used 1 ½ “staples to secure each panel to the ceiling. If you have recessed lighting, fire sprinklers and/or fire alarms on your ceiling – the panels can easily be trimmed to fit around these items. The end result we felt was better than we could have hoped for!
