How to Turn a Crate into a Rolling Blanket Box
Project List:
- 1 crate from the craft store (also available Amazon)
- 4 small casters from your hardware store (also available on Amazon)
- 2 drawer pulls (love the selection on Amazon!)
- White paint of any type
- Painters tape
- Spray paint
- Paint brush
- Drill
- Screwdriver
First, tape off the side of your wood crate along the line of the last rung. The rungs make it easy to make straight lines!
I used a paint sample I had left over and did two coats on the outside only.
In between coats you can spray paint your hardware! I love Design Master spray paints and they have a fantastic gold selection to choose from. The paint adheres well and dries fast! I did light coats, waiting 10 minutes to rotate the pieces in between coats.
*Note: I learned that the plastic wheels of the casters do not take spray paint unless they have a primer base first. So you can tape those off before painting, or like me, just scrub the paint off with a scouring sponge after.
When your hardware is all painted you can then drill your holes according to the size recommendation on the caster package. Be sure to drill your hole away from the wood strip lining the edge or you risk splintering that part off. Hammer in your casters, or follow the given instructions on the package.
When you’re ready to mount your hardware, choose the appropriate middle spot (which in my case was not directly above the other handle holes) and drill a small hole for your screws to fit through. Then use your screwdriver to screw on the handles.

This little crate actually rolls around! I think it looks great with a rolled up blanket and some pretty books and magazines in it. I also hope it will be something my son, due in February, can use to scoot around the house when he’s learning to walk (though we’ll have to see what kind of damage this can do to the walls!)
The white and pine combination are a favorite of mine these days. It’s a bit modern and natural mixed together.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! You might enjoy these similar projects of mine as well!
